When you begin organic vegetable gardening the first step is to consider the size and location of the garden.

You want to make sure that it gets as much exposure to the sun as possible without being too exposed to other elements and weather conditions.

The soil of the spot you are gardening should be well-drained and near a water supply.

There should also be plenty of shade from buildings and trees.

You may also want to build a small fence to enclose the garden as well.

Not only are you looking for ways to keep pests out, but you also need to make sure humans aren’t stepping all over your vegetable garden.

What makes organic vegetable gardening truly organic is the use of non-chemical, natural pest controls. You can place net covers over your vegetables to help keep out harmful insects and for the larger animal pests, you can use Havahart products. They come in different sizes, so the pests you are trying to control will determine which size to get. Havahart products are also known as being safe for you and the animal as well. Live-trapping the animal allows you to set them free later or bring them to animal control.

There is a Japanese beetle that sheds is exoskeleton on lawns and gardens; this causes rotting of the plants, especially roses and grapes.

Instead of using bag beetle traps, you can knock off the exoskeletons into a bucket of soapy water. Or you can cover your garden with floating row covers to keep the beetles off completely. Kaolin clay spray (Surround) is a plant friendly way of keeping beetles off.

Not all vegetables are capable of growing everywhere.

Research which vegetables are grown in your region, during which time of year and see how far apart they should be planted and the soil hardness that is needed.

Getting your soil ready for your organic vegetable gardening process is necessary. Using natural fertilizer and organic compost will help get your vegetable garden prepared for seeding and transplants, if you have any. You should mix the natural fertilizer with your organic garden’s soil at least three weeks in advance. This way by the time you’re ready to begin planting, the soil will be thoroughly prepared.
