Just like with vegan eating, organic vegan gardening has to do with staying away from products made from animals. Blood and bone fertilizer are often used in both organic and conventional gardening.
There are some alternative options for vegan gardeners to use for their organic gardening. One thing that can help condition the soil is lime. It provides calcium and magnesium to the soil. It is important for calcium to be given to the soil because it helps strengthen plant growth. Lime also raises pH levels, which plants thrive on.
Gypsum is another thing vegans can use for their vegan organic gardening. It is hydrated calcium sulfate, which helps raise pH levels in the soil.
Another great idea is to use Dolomite; this is finely ground rock dust. Many people prefer to use dolomite because it has a high source of calcium and magnesium.
For phosphorous content, Rock Phosphate can be used. Phosphorous is an element greatly needed for nutrition and plants and animals. When mined, it is in the form of phosphate rock; it is created by oceans from its original form of calcium phosphate, also known as phosphorite.
Stonemeal, or Rock Dusts, can be used to slowly release proteins into the soil. It is used when trying to re-mineralize soil that has been depleted through industrial forms of agricultural practices. You apply stonemeal directly to the soil as well as in combination with other fertilizers or compost.
Vegan organic gardening procedures can also include Rock Potash, also known as potassium or wood ash. It is important for plants to get potassium because it greatly enhances fruit and flower growth and harden its foliage to make it less susceptible to diseases.
Hay mulches are also a way of fertilizing when you are involved in vegan organic gardening. Thickly covering the soil with hay will feed the soil with organic matter as it breaks down. It also suppresses weeds and encourages worms to live within the soil. Hay mulches are also great for putting a garden to “sleep” during winter months.
One of the top methods of fertilizing to use in organic vegan gardening is organic compost matter. This usually consists of fruit and vegetable rinds, leaves and grass clippings. Food waste, such as peels from the kitchen can also become a part of a compost pile; it should then be covered by leaves, hay or grass clippings. The point of composting is to create layers of food material alternating with covering material to allow aeration.
