The Beauty of Organic Rose Gardening
Growing a beautiful organic rose garden can be easy, fun and highly beneficial. Organic gardening helps to keep the balance between the soil and plants without the use of chemicals that can harm other living organisms and our environment.
Organic rose gardening has developed a reputation of being hard to achieve, but here are a few organic gardening tips that will help you grow stunning roses.
The first tip requires some time and effort especially if you want to grow healthier roses. Before you plant your roses you first have to deal with rose sick soil.
This is soil that has previously been occupied by any member of the rose family and these previous occupants have left behind toxic secretions from their roots and there may also be a build up of ray fungus and nematodes. If you do not deal with this sick soil your new roses will have weak shoots, few and small leaves and you will have few flowers to admire. To solve this problem you have to dig down at least 24” and remove all the soil.
The second tip requires that you replace the soil you have removed with soil from elsewhere mixed with natural compost.
Starting your own compost pile is easy as all you have to do is continuously collect grass cuttings and kitchen scraps such as all vegetable peels and all fruit that has reached its expiry date. You may collect your compost in a container or in a pile in the corner of your garden, but remember to stir it regularly to keep it consistent and let the natural decomposition take place.
Good compost is necessary as it contains microorganisms and micronutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are beneficial for the rose in its growing phase.
Next the selection of your roses is very important as you must only choose the roses that are suitable for your region’s climate, as well as those that are resistant to diseases that are commonly found around your area. There are thousands of types of roses available; therefore anyone who wants to participate in organic rose gardening should have no problems in selecting the right roses for their gardens.
The main concern for all organic rose gardeners is the prevention of pests and diseases. The secret is to plant companion plants which will not only help to remove the harmful bugs and insects, but will also attract the good bugs and insects to your garden.
The best plants are onions and garlic; however, most people do not like the scent of garlic amidst their rose garden. If you are this type of person there are alternatives you can use such as marigolds, thyme, geraniums, mignonettes and rosemary.
These tips may sound like too much hard work, but remember nothing beautiful or valuable comes without hard work and every effort will be worth it once your organic rose garden becomes the envy of all your neighbours.
