Organic Gardening Supplies
One of the most important parts of growing organic gardens is to make sure you are using organic gardening supplies. Failure to follow this plan could lead to a less than desired garden and crop.
Gardening can be compared to painting. The canvas is the ground and the brushes are the gardening tools. Many of the tools used by the ordinary gardener and the organic gardener are similar but the organic gardener needs a few specialty items to make his garden or canvas have that extra advantage of look, taste or smell.
Here are some very important organic gardening supplies that every gardener should consider using:
• A shovel is the most useful of all the organic gardening supplies as it is needed to prepare the ground, dig up roots, transplant larger plants, and unearth tubers, such as potatoes. A smaller spade called a trowel is also necessary for working in smaller areas.
• Spading forks are essential for working in harder soils. They are used to open and break up tough clumps of dirt that could stunt young plants.
• You will also need a hoe to help you remove weeds and spread soil. Remember that organic vegetable gardens are more labour intensive, so using the proper tools will help assist and make things easier. If you can, try and purchase organically made gardening tools as another way to help our environment.
• To prevent back injuries use a well balanced, sturdy wheelbarrow to transport rocks, compost and mulch.
• Protect your hands from dryness, dirt, and blisters by purchasing and using a pair of durable cotton gloves. Be sure to purchase gloves that fit your hands comfortably because if they are too tight, they’ll pinch your hands, and if they are too loose, they’ll rub and slide creating blisters and abrasions.
• Organic compost is probably the single best organic gardening supply you can use in your organic garden. Using nutrient rich compost promotes strong healthy root development in your plants.
• Natural pest control methods promote healthy plant growth free from harmful toxins and chemicals. Natural pest control can include manual weeding, mulching and attracting helpful insects like bees, certain beetles and ladybirds to your organic garden.
• The most important organic gardening supply is organic vegetable seeds because any vegetable seed that is not certified as organic may have been grown with toxic chemicals and fertilizers that are absorbed into the seed. When planted these chemicals will be released into your organic garden.
Using organic gardening supplies is a crucial part of starting a garden that produces fresh fruits and vegetables free from chemicals and toxins found in pesticides and fertilizers.
While the amount of chemicals absorbed by a single vegetable may be very minor, over time these minor amounts can add up and cause serious health implications. That is why it is so important to use proper organic gardening supplies in your own garden!
