Five Common Organic Gardening Mistakes
Since the rediscovery of the numerous environmental benefits associated with organic gardening, more and more people are trying to go back to natural gardening methods. But like with anything new, mistakes are bound to happen. So if you are a beginner, then you should try to avoid some of the common organic gardening mistakes that many first-timers often make.
1. Do Not Over Water or Under Water
Watering is an area where we all make organic gardening mistakes. Both over watering and under watering are detrimental to your plants’ health. Plants with deep roots can pick up more water. Over watering can cause plants to develop shallow root systems. Plants should be watered well, when first planted and then you only need to thoroughly water your plants once a week. This would help in the development of a deep penetrating root system.
Dehydration is the result of under watering. This weakens the plants and makes them vulnerable to diseases.
2. Do Not Use Inorganic Fertilizers
Another organic gardening mistake is to use inorganic fertilizers. Inorganic fertilizers contain too much salt and heavy metals, and prevent the growth of earthworms and soil microorganisms. They only provide nutrients to the plant, but do not enrich the soil.
On the other hand, organic fertilizers release the nutrients slowly into the soil. They enrich the soil, thereby providing food for your plants for a longer time.
3. Do Not Over Fertilize Your Garden
Using too much organic fertilizer is not good. The idea is to preserve the soil’s pH balance. If your soil’s pH balance is healthy, then one inch of compost is adequate for your vegetables and flowers for a whole year. Adding sufficient compost every year will lead to a balanced pH in the soil.
4. Do Not Plant without Planning
Plan your organic garden before you plant anything. Planning will take into consideration availability of water, whether your garden should be north facing or south facing, windy nature of the area, etc. Also it is important to know where your plants should be planted. A plant that does better in shade will not fare well in direct sunlight all day. In addition, consider a plant’s height; you don’t want your tallest plant in the front row of your garden bed, hiding the plants behind it.
5. Do Not Forget to Weed
Once planted, you will need to weed. If you don’t, it will be yet another mistake that can ruin your organic garden. Weeds compete with plants for nutrients, water and light. By weeding you will be promoting strong growth for your plants.
We all make mistakes, no matter what we are doing. But in gardening, mistakes can have a devastating effect. The more knowledge you have about organic gardening, the fewer mistakes you will make. By caring for your plants and being aware of the plant’s conditions, you can avoid many mistakes and have a lush garden to relax in all summer.

These are great points to highlight! Some people seem rather lazy in that they expect a garden to grow with no effort. I’ve seen it before. You could also add at the end: Do not expect to reap anything at the end of the harvest, as you’ve sown nothing.
